Imphal: Indira Gandhi National Open University, IGNOU, Regional Centre Imphal has launched ‘Channel-based counselling in the Manipuri language.’ The launching event was held at Asha Hall, Asha-Jina Complex, North AOC in Imphal on Monday afternoon. IGNOU Regional Centre in Imphal was established on 1st December 2000 with 3 study centres operating under Regional Centre Shillong. Subsequently, the three study centres were brought under the administrative control of the Imphal Regional Centre. The overall trend in enrollment at IGNOU Regional Centre, Imphal has been continuously rising.

Minister of State, External Affairs and Education, Government of India, Dr Rajkumar Ranjan graced the event as chief guest. Prof Nageshwar Rao, vice-chancellor of IGNOU, Prof Uma Kanjilal, Pro vice-chancellor, Dr Srikant Mahopatra, Pro vice-chancellor, Dr UC Pandey, Director RSD, Dr Salam Dilan, RD, Manipur attended the event among other distinguished guests.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr RK Ranjan congratulated IGNOU for creating the technology-based learning system to provide a learning environment in the Manipuri language in line with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 which has emphasized teaching in the mother tongue. He expressed hope that the far-reaching impact of this endeavour will endurefor generations and empower individuals who will steer India’s progress in the 21st century and beyond.
“NEP 2020 amply focuses on the promotion of all Indian languages and mother tongues irrespective of their status. IGNOU can take a pivotal role and can contribute tremendously through its vast network to the promotion of the Manipuri language and the development of a positive attitude towards the language. The channel-based counselling now in Manipuri by IGNOU through the SWAYAM Prabha Channel is an act of foresight, a commitment to the future, and a belief in the transformative power of education especially for the Manipuri community not only settled in Manipur but also spread across the country as well as the Manipuri diaspora”, he said.

IGNOU has been offering channel-based counselling to BA students in Social Sciences in 13 languages with the help of Regional Centres across the country through the SWYAM Prabha Channels of the Government of India. The live sessions that run for more than 5500+ hours have also been archived on YouTube and are a rich resource made available to learners in the regional languages.
