Imphal: Manipur on Friday joined the rest of the world in observing of World Ozone Day.
September 16 is observed as World Ozone Day, also known as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.
World Ozone Day is celebrated to draw attention to one of the biggest threats that humanity faces, the depletion of the ozone layer, and the dangers of ozone depletion.
“The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the ozone layer,” said Manipur Forest and Environment minister Th Bishwajit in a speech on the occasion.
The minister addressed the event held at the auditorium of Manipur Science Centre, Imphal under the aegis of the Science and Technology Directorate.
The minister observed that the depletion of ozone layer is closely related with the degrading environment.
The earth is the only planet where living things exist. So, it is necessary to preserve the ozone layer for the existence of living things, he added.
Reiterating that the depletion of the ozone layer is closely related with the degradation of environment and climate change, the minister asserted the important role of each and every individual in the preservation of the environment to protect climate change.
At the same time, there is a need for reduction in using the technology and chemicals that help depletion of the ozone layer, he also said.
There is the need for culturing the habit of avoiding indulging in activities which will be harmful to the ozone layer, he further said.
The Directorate of Science and Technology, government of Manipur observed the day under the theme ‘Global Cooperation to protect life on Earth.’
The World Ozone Day theme this year focuses on and encourages collective efforts and cooperation for the protection of life on Earth.
World Ozone Day theme also invites various measures that could help in the fight against climate change, experts who talked on the importance of the ozone layer for the existence of living things.
