Poumai Naga Union Dissociates from UNC and Other Naga Frontal Organizations

Senapati: In a decisive move to safeguard the rights and prerogatives of the Poumai Naga community, the Poumai Naga Union (PNU) has resolved to dissociate from the United Naga Council (UNC) and other associated organizations such as the All Naga Students Association, Manipur (ANSAM), Naga Women’s Union, Manipur (NWUM), and Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR). This resolution was adopted during the 3rd assembly of the union held on May 31, 2024, at the Sanyi Dahrii Memorial Sports Complex, Khabung Karong.

After a thorough examination of the order dated May 20, 2024 (ref. no. 42-03/24-25/ORDR/MKA/GPRN), served to 11 Poumai Naga leaders, the PNU concluded that it will reserve the right to “DEFEND AND SECURE” the Poumai people against any threats to their existence, well-being, and freedom. The PNU unanimously resolved to reject this order, asserting zero tolerance for external interference.

The assembly has requested the withdrawal of the indictment order within 15 days from May 31, 2024. Failure to comply may compel the PNU to initiate further actions, including launching a non-cooperation movement to protect their vital interests.

The assembly also resolved that the Poumai Naga leaders named in the indictment order shall not resign from their respective public and social offices, as they were elected by the Poumai assembly to continue their mandated roles.

Based on the resolutions passed by the PNU and the election committee, the assembly declared six individuals—Ng. Lorho (Tunggam Afii), M. Joyson Mazhamo (Khondei Shimphung), K. S. Paul Leo (Oinam), M. L. Markson (Laii), R. K. Holison (Khamsom), and Kh. Sapunii (Phuba Khuman)—to have acted contrary to the approved resolutions. Appropriate actions will be taken against these individuals, including a social/political boycott of up to 10 years in accordance with Poumai Naga Customary Law and Tradition.

Furthermore, the assembly nullified the recommendation letter issued to Ng. Lorho for the presidency of the UNC, effectively debarring him from representing the PNU or holding any position in related organizations.

A welcome address was delivered by R. B. Pani, President of the PNU, at the start of the assembly. The vacant posts for the Poumai Naga Customary Law Court were filled, with V. Dukhu from Phuba Thapham Village inducted as Court Chairman and R. S. Ngaopunii from Purul Atongba Village as Court Registrar. The oath of office was administered by Sh. Dany, Speaker of Assembly Affairs, PNU.

The assembly reaffirmed previous PNU resolutions regarding the issue of Tingsong Centre, Tingsong Khunou, and Thiwa Village. The event was chaired by Sh. Dany, Assembly Speaker, PNU, and attended by over 500 members, including Union Executives, Advisors, Frontal Organizations, Village Chairmen and Secretaries, Headmen, the Union Election Committee of 2024, Union Court Members, various political and religious leaders, social activists, and well-wishers.
