Ukhrul: A campaign on ‘Promoting Organic Production of Horticultural Crops’ was conducted by KVK (Krishi Vigyan Kendra) Ukhrul, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre. It was conducted as a part of the Mega Campaign of Annadata Devo Bhava under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav on Friday the 22nd of April 2022 at Ngashantang, Ukhrul.

In the keynote address, Dr Solei Luiram, Head I/C KVK Ukhrul shared insights about the combination of management techniques to maintain soil quality and fertility while controlling weeds, pests and diseases for organic production of horticultural crops.

“Most of the food that we generally consume from the market is inorganic. But thinking about the well-being of our health we want to promote organic farming. Since Ukhrul is one of the main potential producers of organic food among the districts in Manipur state, we want to appeal and encourage the farmers to promote organic food,” said Dr Solei Luiram.

Varechon Raikhan, District Agriculture Officer (DAO), Ukhrul, also supplemented the importance of organic horticultural crops produced in the region and its economic advantage in marketing.

“Since Ukhrul has great potential for producing organic food, MOMA (Manipur Organic Mission Agency) department is also conducting various programs. Therefore, I suggest farmers, grasp the opportunity and make use of the advantage to promote and produce more organic horticultural crops,” concluded Yarmeila Saree, Subject Matter Specialist, Agron.

The program was attended by 60 people from various fields. Apart from many farmers, Thanmila Lunar, Proprietor, Oriental Naga Academy, and many youths actively participated in the program.
