Three held with 1,180 bottles of banned cough syrup in Manipur

Three persons arrested with banned cough syrups were being paraded at Imphal East district police campus on Wednesday

Three persons were arrested with 1,180 bottles of banned cough syrup in Imphal East district of Manipur, police said on Wednesday. The seized banned codeine-based cough syrup would be worth around Rs 2.46 lakh in the local market, the police added.

According to police, the arrested persons have been identified as Salim Malik (41), son of Abdul Salam of Khergao Chandam (Imphal East district), Anish Shah (37), son of late Karim Shah of Lilong (Thoubal district) and Yahiya Khan (49), son of late Helalludin Khan of Lilong Haoreibi Makha Leikai (Thoubal district).

Addressing a press conference, Imphal East SP, Dr Jogeshchandra Haobijam said that the banned codeine-based cough syrup was recovered in an operation launched based on specific information at Kiyamgei area under Irilbung police station of Imphal East district on Tuesday night. The operation was launched by a combined team of Narcotic Cell of Imphal East district police and 38 Assam Rifles. Members of Youth Athletic Development Association (YADA), Khergao assisted the team during the operation, the police officer said.

While a search operation in the area was in progress, the combined team stopped a car moving in a suspicious manner and checked the vehicle on spot while detaining three occupants. During the check, 10 boxes containing the banned cough syrups were recovered, the police officer further said.

The arrested persons along with the seized banned cough syrups were handed over to Irilbung police station for necessary legal action after lodging a case, the police officer added.
