Manipur Police arrest 8 students over vandalism at exam centre, probe ordered

Imphal, Feb 26: Police in Thoubal district of Manipur on Sunday arrested eight students who were allegedly behind vandalism at an examination centre of Class-XII conducted by the Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM).

An official source said that the eight students were arrested after they surrendered to the Yairipok police station of Thoubal district where a case was registered regarding the vandalism.

All the arrested are students of Azad Higher Secondary School appearing in higher secondary examination at examination centre ACME Higher Secondary School, Yairipok of Thoubal district.

It can be mentioned here that, on Saturday, a group of students appearing in the ongoing Class-XII final examination, indulged in vandalism at their examination at ACME Higher Secondary School Yairipok, injuring several students in the melee.

The incident occurred reportedly after the teachers on examination duty denied unfair means during the examination. Some students of Azad Higher Secondary School allegedly pelted concrete stones at the new building of ACME besides damaging infrastructure like benches and desks, etc.

Yairipok police station who rushed to the school took first hand stock of the situation after putting the situation under control and registered a case under various sections of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) regarding the incident.

During the preliminary investigation, the police established the names of eight students who allegedly initiated the vandalism.

An official source said that the eight students turned up at the police station and surrendered. The police formally arrested them, the source added.

Meanwhile, the Education department has ordered an inquiry into the unfortunate incident to ascertain the origin of the incident and to suggest preventive measures to prevent such incident in future.

The order was issued on the directive of Education minister Th Basantakumar who assured legal actions against the erring students, the source said.

The Education minister reportedly asked the concerned officials of the department to submit the inquiry report by Monday.

The minister has also asked the COHSEM to make arrangements for conducting fresh examinations for the particular subject for the other students of the examination centre, the source added.
