The Ministry of Home Affairs invoked the whole Nagaland state as Disturbed Area for another six months effective June 30 till December 2021.
The central government notification, dated June 30, 2021 opined that “the area comprising the whole of the State of Nagaland is in such a disturbed and dangerous condition that the use of armed forces in aid of the civil power is necessary,” the notification said.
The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) has been in force in Nagaland for several decades.
A well-known Indian journalist on defence said on twitter that “AFSPA has never been lifted in the state after 1958 (or the districts that became the Nagaland state in 1963). That would be unbroken spell of 63 years of AFSPA,” he wrote.
