Ukhrul: The Hojai District Committee and Assam State Unit have reiterated their concerns regarding the political marginalization of the Meetei community residing in Assam. They have been advocating for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status in the state, a demand that predates similar requests by Meeteis in Manipur.

In a press release by the World Meetei Council, Assam Unit, it states that the Assam government has made it clear that granting ST status to the Meeteis of Assam is contingent upon the recognition of the Meeteis in Manipur as Scheduled Tribes. The community is currently facing challenges related to representation and political inclusion, as several key communities in Assam are on the verge of being added to the ST list.
Without elected representatives, the Meeteis living outside Manipur are experiencing significant economic and political difficulties. The Hojai committee believes that the Chief Minister of Manipur represents the broader Meetei community across India and should act in their favor.

The impending delimitation of constituencies in 2026 poses an additional concern for the Meeteis. With a declining population, the community fears a reduction in their political representation, both in Manipur and Assam, stated the statement.
In light of these pressing issues, the committee has made an urgent appeal to the Manipur government to ensure the inclusion of the Meeteis in the ST list before the 2026 delimitation, which they believe will pave the way for similar inclusion in Assam.
