Kuki Body Bans Meitei Mayek (Manipuri Script) in Schools in Moreh

Ukhrul, Jan 17: The Hill Tribal Council, a Kuki body, has instructed all government and private schools in Moreh town to remove Manipuri/Meitei Mayek from the school syllabus starting with the academic year 2025-2026.

In an official statement, the Education Department of the Council stated that it issued the directive to ensure students are taught ‘useful and productive subjects only’ and to respect the sentiment and culture of the ‘Indigenous’ Kuki-Zo people, considering the current political conflict.

Further, the Council instructed students to choose ‘important’ subjects such as Hindi, English, Mizo, Thadou, Hmar, Zou, Maring, Anal, Vaiphei, Paite, Gangte, or any other MIL subjects instead.

Failure to comply with this notice may result in a penalty, the Council cautioned.
