NSUD and NESCH Hold Legal Awareness Program on Workplace Harassment and Employee Rights in Delhi

Delhi: The Naga Students’ Union, Delhi (NSUD) in collaboration with the Northeast Support Centre & Helpline organized a Legal Awareness Program on “Sexual Harassment at Workplace and Employee Rights” on Saturday, at the Community Centre, PTS, Malviya Nagar, Delhi. The event was held in partnership with the Special Police Unit for North East Region and Nyay Neeti Foundation.

Jepi Y Chisho, President of NSUD, highlighted the growing concerns regarding labor rights violations faced by members employed across Delhi-NCR. The event aimed to raise awareness of employees’ basic rights and facilitate access to existing support systems for addressing workplace-related grievances.

Dr. Alana Golmei, Advocate and founder of the Northeast Support Centre & Helpline (NESCH), discussed the challenges Northeast people face in metro cities, including discrimination, rent-related issues, human trafficking, and fake job agencies. Dr. Golmei provided a brief background on the establishment of the Special Police Unit for the North East Region and ongoing efforts to improve the safety and security of Northeast people in metro cities. She encouraged participants to be vigilant about their rights.

Further, advocate Eliza Rumthao, a Delhi-based lawyer associated with NESCH, conducted a session on Sexual Harassment at the Workplace. She explained various acts and behaviors that constitute sexual harassment and emphasized the importance of being aware of such actions. She informed participants about the rights and protections for female employees under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013.

Advocate Fidel Sebastian, a labor lawyer and co-founder of Nyay Neeti Foundation, spoke about the basic rights and entitlements of employees in any establishment and the legal remedies available to enforce these rights. He stressed the need for collective efforts by employees to deter employers from adopting exploitative labor practices.

Advocate Samuel Khobung from the North East Law Network discussed how to access and utilize Legal Aid Services for individuals unable to afford private legal services.

Ms. KP Emelda Piphyane, General Secretary of NSUD, delivered the vote of thanks, and the program concluded with a prayer.
