IMPHAL: Shouting “hang the culprits to death” slogan, residents of Heibongmakhong in Imphal West district, where the alleged gang-raped victim of 14-year-old girl hailed from, demanded on Sunday.
Hundreds of residents of Heibongmakhong and its adjoining villages took part in a sit-in-protest staged, demanding justice for the victim.
The teenage girl who was abandoned after allegedly gang-raped near a public pond under Mayang Imphal police station of Imphal West on September 2 morning succumbed at ICU ward of RIMS hospital, Imphal the next day. Police investigating the case have so far arrested six accused of the incident.
Residents of Heibongmakhong who formed a joint action committee (JAC) have been pressing the state government to deliver justice in this regard. As part of its ongoing protest, the JAC organised a sit-in-protest at a public ground in the village. People from neighbouring villages also took part in the protest showing their solidarity.
“We want justice,” “Award capital punishment to culprits,” some of the placards displayed at the protest site read.
Taking part in the protest, Maibam-Uchiwa GP Pradhan Abdul Litif said that they have heard about the arrest of the accused in the incident. He demanded capital punishment to the culprits while reminding the hang to death of four men convicted over the infamous Delhi bus gang-raped incident.
At the concluding part of the protest, the protesters stood up and shouted various slogans drawing the government’s attention towards awarding befitting punishment to the culprits involved in the crime.
