Students of Centrally run Manipur University on Thursday set December 5 as deadline to appoint regular vice-chancellor (VC) of the university or make an interim arrangement for the same post.

The post of VC of the Manipur University runs under the Union ministry of Education is lying vacant after an order of the High Court of Manipur relieved appointed administrator Jarnail Singh from looking after the charge of the VC on November 30.

Even after Jarnail Singh was relieved, the concerned authority failed to appoint regular VC or make an interim arrangement like appointment of VC in-charge till date.

Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) on Thursday alleged that owing to non-appointment of the regular VC or VC in-charge the administration of the MU has been put in a doldrums and set December 5 as deadline to the concerned authority to bring back the administration to normalcy.

Addressing a press conference at MUSU office at MU campus, its president M Bobby alleged that problems were created in the normal administration of the university due to the absence of the VC. Particularly, students are facing problems in obtaining certificates and other documents, he alleged.

At the same time, there is no possibility of appointing regular VC for the time being as a court case over the dismissal of AP Pandey as VC of the university is still pending, he said. MUSU is unhappy with the Union ministry of Education for its alleged silence over the matter without appointing VC in-charge, he said.

The student leader then said that the students, particularly MUSU, were remaining silent with the hope that the concerned ministry will certainly do the needful. “If no step is taken in this regard by the Union ministry side by tomorrow (December 4), MUSU will launch various forms of agitations from the next day”, he warned.

To mention here, the then vice chancellor AP Pandey was removed following violent agitations with various allegations including misappropriation of funds among others by the students in 2018. With the Centre and the state government unable to resolve the issue, the High Court of Manipur intervened and appointed Jarnail Singh as administrator to discharge his duty as VC of the university.
