Schools for classes VI to VIII in Manipur will be reopened from March 8 after almost 11 months of closure.
Admission of students for all classes (except-XI) for the academic session 2021-22 will also be allowed from March 20, an order issued by the commissioner of Education –Schools, T Ranjit on Wednesday said.
All admission processes in all government, government-aided and private schools remained halt following an order of the state authority passed in January this year.
The Manipur government closed all educational institutions in the state with effect from March 12, 2020 as a part of government’s measure to control the spread of COVID-19 and protect the students and staff of the institution from exposing to the pandemic. However, following mark improvement in the spread of the coronavirus in the state, the state government allowed reopening of the schools for Class-IX and above with effect from January 27, 2021. The state government further approved to reopen schools for classes VI to VIII from March 8, 2021 by strictly observing the COVID-19 SOP and guidelines, said the commissioner of education (schools) in his order issued on Wednesday.

Admission of students for all classes, except Class-XI, for the academic session 2021-22 are also allowed from March 20, 2021, the same order further stated. The order further allowed schools to come up with their systems of evaluation for students starting from class VI to XI in lieu of the annual examinations for promotion to the next higher classes. However, regarding curriculum and the evaluation procedures for elementary education, it should be ensured that the provisions of section 29 of RTE Act 2009 should be adhered to, the order said.
The order then stated that in case of students of class V and below, evaluation should be made through home assignments, subject to the provisions of section 16 of the RTE Act 2009 as amended from time to time. The commission of Education (S) further informed that the academic session for 2021-22 for schools affiliated to Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BoSEM) and Council of Higher Secondary Education (CoHSEM) will commence from April 5, 2021. Further, BoSEM and CoHSEM are allowed to conduct exams for class-X and class-XII commencing from the first week of May, 2021.
The order then notified schools to give a one-time promotion to students of class-V and below as a special case for the academic session 2021-2020 as per RTE Act.
Section 16(3) of RTE Act, 2009 states that “provided that the appropriate government may decide not to hold back a child in any class till the completion of elementary education.”
The order asked all teaching and non-teaching staff, including grade-IV employees etc. working in schools of class-V and below to compulsorily attend their respective schools.
