Irate investors of Salai Group of Companies on Wednesday attempted to storm Cheirap court complex in Imphal where Narengbam Samarjit was produced before the court of special NIA court.
Samarjit, the self-style ‘external affairs and defence minister of the de-jure Manipur government’ based in the UK, was the chairman cum managing director of the Salai Group of Companies where investors in terms of thousands invested their money. The investors were left high and dry after he declared his separatist stance after he moved to the UK in 2019.
On learning that he would be produced in the court, a large number of investors converged in front of the Cheirap Court Complex where a tight security measure was put in place before Samarjit was produced.
Investors numbering nearly 20,000 were left high and dry and their investments to Salai Group have not paid any dividends since a police case was registered against Samarjit after he declared Manipur’s independence after forming the de-jure government in the UK in October 2019. NIA is currently investigating the case.
The alert police foiled the investors from storming the court complex where Samarjit was produced amid tight security measures.
The special judge of the NIA court remanded him to NIA custody for 13 days, till April 12. The court asked NIA to produce him in the same court on April 12 for further proceedings.
Samarjit was arrested by NIA from Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi where he landed from London for onward journey to Manipur on March 25.
He was brought to Imphal on March 29 after taking transit remand at Patiala Court, Delhi.
