Imphal: An enhanced security measure is put in place across Manipur, particularly in the vicinities of the venues where Republic Day parades will be held as Manipur prepares to celebrate the country’s 73th Republic Day amid boycott calls given by various groups. Police sources said that armed police, state and central security forces are deployed in the state capital and headquarters of all the districts of the state to check any untoward incident during the celebration.
In the state capital, tight security measure has been put in place well ahead of the day by way of conducting mopping operations at sensitive places, particularly in and around the Imphal where the state level function to mark the celebration of the Republic Day celebration is to be held with a march-past parade. Police and paramilitary CRPF personnel have been deployed across the capital city of the state to keep an eye on any suspicious activity.
The tightened security has been taken up in the state in the backdrop of general strikes and total shutdown called by various groups as part of boycott of the day.
Apart from rebel sponsored total shutdowns, United Naga Council (UNC) is also boycotting the day under its jurisdiction.
In Imphal, particularly areas to be covered by the march-past contingents, security has been fortified by detailing armed state security assisted by the central forces.
All preparations for the state level celebration in Imphal have been completed, an official of the Home department said.
The constructions of gates by various departments on the route to be covered by the march-past parade are also in progress till late this evening.
Various rebel groups including the Coordination Committee (CorCom) have already announced total shutdowns as a part of boycotting the country’s Republic Day celebrations in the state.
