Imphal: In a big boost to railway connectivity in northeast region, two more passenger trains has been inaugurated by President Droupadi Murmu from Agartala Railway station in Tripura on Thursday.
The extension of the Jan Shatabdi Express trains from Agartala to Manipur’s Khongsang and Agartala-Kolkata by the Northern Frontier Railway (NFR) is expected to improve railway connectivity in the northeast region.
“President Droupadi Murmu flagged off Agartala-Khongsang Jan Shatabdi Express and Agartala-Kolkata Express from Agartala Railway station. The trains connecting Tripura to Assam, West Bengal and Manipur will boost connectivity and tourism in the North East region,” said President of India Droupadi Murmu on her official Twitter handle.
According to the Railways, the extension of Agartala-Jiribam-Agartala Jan Shatabdi Express up to Khongsang will connect the three northeast states such as Tripura, Assam and Manipur, giving boost to the region’s economic activities.

Now, the train journey from Agartala to Khongsang will be around seven hours and covered a distance of 300 kilometres against the about 15 hours by road, it said.
The express has new Linke Hofmann Busch coaches with latest amenities for passengers and a Vistadome coach has also been added to this train.
Agartala-Jiribam Jan Shatabdi Express was the first direct train connecting Tripura and Manipur via Badarpur in Assam by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).
The newly inaugurated passenger trains will commence its regular journey with effect from October 14 and running three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
The railway section at Khongsang has been constructed as part of the 111-km Jiribam-Imphal railway line project.
