Ukhrul, Dec 13: Garbage dumping site at Hungpung along the Ukhrul-Imphal road seemingly installed to streamline waste management in Ukhrul Town has become a bane for people living near by as well as for the environment. The village community has asked for its immediate removal.
According to Ency YL, president of Women of Hungpung Unit for Social Advancement (WHUSA), over 100 rice fields have been left untenable and river water contaminated due to toxic chemical produced by burning plastics and other toxic wastes. Also the close proximity of the site to the village has also proved to be hazardous for village community, thanks to the toxic fume.

What appalled the denizens is how carcasses of death animals are simply dumped along the stretch of National Highway-202. It has become a health risk for the people, said WHUSA.
Ency YL blamed the poor waste management of the authority and appealed the government to remove the dumping site at the earliest from the highway.
WHUSA in collaboration with other civil organizations of Hungpung organized a one day Cleanliness Drive along the National Highway-202 with special focus on the dumping site on Monday.
