Shillong: The National People’s Party and its allies in Meghalaya received a shot in the arm before the formation of a new government as the support of two legislators from the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) late Friday has been opposed by the [HSPDP] party.
On Friday, NPP national chief and newly elected parliamentary party leader Conrad K Sangma submitted signatures of 32 MLAs (26 from NPP, 2 BJP, 2 HSPDP and 2 Independents) and letters of support to Governor Phagu Chauhan after he had invited the NPP, being the single largest party, to form the government in the state.

The HSPDP on late Friday wrote to the NPP national chief, Conrad K Sangma its withdrawal of support to his party.

“The HSPDP did not authorize the two MLAs i.e. Methodious Dkhar and Shakliar Warjri to lend support to the formation of your government as we have seen through the press/media report. The party has no role in this affair and therefore, withdraw our support to your party,” the letter signed by the HSPDP president and secretary wrote.
NPP and its allies needs 31 legislators to stake a claim to form the new government, now short by one.
The oath-taking ceremony is expected to take place on March 7. Further developments awaited.
