FRPM Condemns attack on Indigenous Naga tribals of Manipur

Imphal: The Forum For Restoration of Peace, Manipur has expressed concerns and condemnation over the escalating attacks towards non-warring Naga tribals in strife-torn Manipur with at least three reported cases so far this December.

The Forum which was established on May 5, 2023 with a mission to restore peace in Manipur is constituted by members from Naga, Meitei-Pangal and Gorkhas.

Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club in Imphal on Monday afternoon, FRPM Convenor Ashang Kasar expressed disappointment over the rising cases of attacks and assaults of Naga people at various locations in the state.

He said, FRPM was formed to bridge the differences between the two warring communities in the state and that its members have been making all efforts for restoration of peace and normalcy in the region.

“But amid their ongoing effort, Naga people who are indigenous inhabitants of the state have been assaulted on various occasions at different places,” Ashang Kasar said, pointing out three cases reported so far in December itself — The Sawombung incident where 3 Tangkhul youths were beaten black and blue on December 3; The assault of two Rongmei ladies on December 8 in Bishnupur District; and the attack on a passenger vehicle driver from Tamenglong at Moidangpok area on December 10.

The FRPM Convenor condemned the unwanted incidents and said “it will only bring discord among indigenous inhabitants.”

Stating that currently there seems to be no law and order in Manipur, Ashang Kasar said such untoward incidents could have been averted if the government took effective measures.

He also urged the relevant authorities to nab the culprits at the earliest and deliver justice to the victims. He also appealed to the public to refrain from any activities which could create misunderstandings and conflict among communities.
