The Mizoram government has decided to withdraw state security forces from the Assam-Mizoram disputed border area. Instead of the state security forces, the BSF will station now in the area.
Mizoram chief secretary Lalnunmawia Chuaungo said on Sunday that there is a new development after the meeting of the chief secretaries of Assam and Mizoram. The meeting was held under the leadership of Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla via video conference on Sunday.
Besides withdrawing the Mizoram security forces from the disputed area, the blockade on National Highway 306 will also be lifted by Assam. The Mizoram chief secretary said normal traffic along the NH-306 will resume any time.
The blockade imposed by residents from Assam side started on October 28 demanding the withdrawal of Mizoram security forces from the disputed area.
Even though normalcy may return in the disputed border area any moment, it does not mean that the border dispute has been resolved.
According to the Mizoram chief secretary, the Sunday meeting was aimed only for adhoc measures first. The meeting between the two chief secretaries revolved around withdrawal of security forces by the Mizoram government from the disputed border area and the lifting of NH-306 blockade by residents of Assam, according to the Mizoram chief secretary.
During the meeting, the Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla urged the Mizoram government to withdraw its forces from the area. The Union Home secretary also urged Assam to lift the blockade, according to the Mizoram chief secretary.
The Centre was keen to resolve the border dispute. The Centre has been keeping in touch with both the state governments constantly, according to sources.
However, it is still not clear the concrete steps to resolve the Assam-Mizoram border dispute.
