Following the appointment of Govindas Konthoujam as President of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee by the Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday; Govindas Konthoujam today assumed the charge at Congress Bhavan, B T Road here in the presence of the outgoing President M. Okendro Singh and other senior Congress leaders.
He expressed his gratitude to the leaders of the Indian National Congress and said, “I would like to thank Madam Sonia Gandhi ji and Shri Rahul Gandhi ji for giving the responsibility to a small worker like me.”
Before assuming the charge of new President of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, he visited Shree Shree Govindaji Temple, Palace Compound, Imphal and Umang Lai deity located in the campus of MPCC and prayed for peace, integrity, good health, and development of the state in particular and India at a large.
Son of (Late) K. Gojendro Singh of Ningthoukhong Ward No.2, Bishnupur District, Govindas Konthoujam was born on March 1, 1963 in a family of social activist and active member of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (I).
He did his schooling at Rama Krishna Mission Vidyalaya, Narendrapur, West Bengal, Board of Secondary Education, Karnataka and Manipur University, Imphal till his completion of graduation.
In the field of politics, he joined as member of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (I) in 1985 and was an active member of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (I) in 1992.
He became the President of Bishnupur District Youth Congress Committee (I), Bishnupur in 1993. In 1994, he took part at the celebration of 3 years successful completion of late Narashima Rao led government at the Centre in New Delhi.
In 1995, he was elected as MLA from 26-Bishnupur Assembly Constituency and was lone Congress MLA of Bishnupur District. He held the portfolio of Minister of State (Education and Power). In 1997, he became the Cabinet Minister (Power).
In 2000, he was re-elected from-26-Bishnupur Assembly Constituency and held the portfolio of Minister (Power). In 2002, he was re-elected from the same constituency and became the Minister (PHED, YAS & amp; Tourism). In 2006, he held the portfolio of Minister (PWD, YAS & Tourism) and was Minister in- charge, Bishnupur District. In 2006, he became the Member All India Congress Committee.
In 2007, he was re-elected from 26-Bishnupur Assembly Constituency. In 2012, he was again elected from 26-Bishnupur Assembly Constituency and became the Minister of Commerce and Industries/Veterinary & Animal Husbandry and Sericulture.
