Agartala, Dec 27: All five accused in the controversial death of Dharmanagar delivery worker Prasenjit Sarkar are now in police custody following Saturday’s arrest of the final two suspects, a development that has restored public confidence in the justice system after a case involving public assault, social media humiliation, and an alleged murder disguised as suicide.

The North Tripura District Superintendent of Police confirmed in a mobile message that Meghadip Bhattacharjee (24), a resident of Madhya Nayapara in Dharmanagar, and Piu Dhar (22), a resident of South Hurua village, were arrested around 9 AM on Saturday from the Churaibari Police Station area.

According to police sources, based on confidential information, a special team led by Dharmanagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Meena Debbarma and investigating officer Arup Das conducted a raid at the Churaibari checkpoint. Meghadip was first arrested from a private vehicle, and following his interrogation, Piu was apprehended from another vehicle. The Churaibari Police Station assisted in the operation.

On Saturday, the arrested individuals were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court in Dharmanagar, where Additional Judge Aparajita Sinha ordered them to be held in judicial custody until December 30.

Although initially considered suicide, the victim’s father Nepal Sarkar filed a murder complaint on December 14 at Dharmanagar Police Station against five individuals, including sisters Susmita and Sangita Bhattacharjee from South Hurua village, Piu Dhar, and Sourab Bhattacharjee and Meghadip Bhattacharjee from Dharmanagar. Police registered case number 122/2025 under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 329(4), 115(2), 103(1), and 3(5).

The three main accused, Susmita, Sangita, and Sourab, were arrested on December 18 from the Sribhumi Railway Station area with assistance from Assam Police. However, Meghadip and Piu remained absconding until Saturday.

Family members of Prasenjit present at the court premises stated that this incident has created a stir not only in Tripura but throughout the entire northeastern region. They expressed their belief that being with criminals or assisting in crime is equally criminal, noting that without the remaining two individuals, such a major incident might not have occurred. They demanded police remand for interrogation of the detained individuals to ensure justice for Prasenjit.

The incident originated on December 13 when five young individuals allegedly assaulted 24-year-old Prasenjit Sarkar and forced him to do sit-ups while holding his ears in front of the Blue Dart courier company franchise outlet located at Rajbari area in Dharmanagar over a minor dispute related to online goods delivery. The humiliating incident was recorded on video and circulated on social media. The following morning, Prasenjit’s hanging body was recovered near his home.

The arrest of all accused, albeit slightly delayed, has brought relief to the public mind and increased confidence in the justice system. All eyes are now on the court’s final verdict.
