UKHRUL, NOVEMBER 20: A shocking case of medical fraud came to light when The Assam Council of Medical Registration received a formal complaint against S Sartaj Uddin.

Bongaigaon Police launched an investigation and allegedly exposed Uddin as a fake doctor ‘practicing’ medicine for 25 years. According to reports he had been operating since 2001 without any recognized medical degree or registration.

During these years Uddin was reportedly running his own clinic, a multi storey building in Bongaigaon.

Uddin however managed to escape and an investigation has been launched to trace and arrest him.

This case follows a series of arrests since the launch of the Anti-Quackery & Vigiliance Cell earlier this year. Atleast 22 individuals impersonating medical professionals in Assam were apprehended.

During August, Pulak Malakar who performed more than 50 caesarean sections over a decade under a fake MMBS degree in Silchar was also exposed.

The alarming impact of fake doctors is revealed with 11.01% of deaths in Assam involving patients who initially sought treatment from these unlicensed practitioners.
