In a positive development, the indefinite economic blockade imposed on Nagaland from November 17 by Assam’s Karbi Anglong based organizations has been “temporarily suspended” from Tuesday evening following a meeting held on Tuesday between the deputy commissioners of Dimapur district of Nagaland and Karbi Anglong of Assam. The commissioner of police of Dimapur district and officials from Karbi Anglong of Assam also took part in the meeting.
It can be recalled that various Karbi Anglong based organizations alleged that there had been “illegal encroachments” of land in Karbi Anglong by people of Nagaland. The blockade was also imposed in protest against “the failure of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and the Assam government to protect their land”, according to Karbi Students’ Association (KSA).
The Karbi Anglong based organisations had been demanding the Assam and Nagaland governments to “resolve the boundary issue and establish proper demarcation to avoid conflicts in future”.
