CHANDEL, NOV 22: In a major boost to the war on drugs carried out by the state government, a team led by Chandel district police destroyed approximately 50 (fifty) acres of illicit poppy cultivation at Gobok hill range located about 20 km east from Chakpikarong Police Station under Khengjoi Sub-Division in Chandel district on Saturday.

According to the police, a combined team of Chandel District Police under overall supervision of Dharmendra Kumar IPS SP Chandel was led by TS. Chamna Anal MPS Additional SP (Ops), Chandel and assisted by OC Chakpikarong PS Inspector Joy Martin and his team.
Chandel PS team, Reserve Line Chandel team, 8 MR personnel, 17 & 43 AR personnel, BSF E/200 Coy personnel, Forest Department, Chandel team, NCB & NAB Police team including SDM Khengjoi, numbering altogether 120 personnel destroyed the illicit poppy cultivation at Gobok hill range under Khengjoi Sub-Division, the police said. This could produce approximately 250 Kgs of Opium worth Rs.1,75,00,000 (Rupees one crore and seventy five lakhs).

Some poppy pods and poppy seeds were recovered from the spots whereas 4 (four) temporary huts were also burnt down. There was no one present at the cultivation side while no one has come forward to claim the ownership. A case has been registered at Chakpikarong PS, the Chandel district police informed.
