Ukhrul: The Indigenous Peoples Forum Manipur organized the “Chingmee Tammee gi Ningol Chakouba” celebration at the Indigenous Resort in Chadong New Site, Kamjong District, on Friday. The event aimed to reinforce bonds between the hill and valley communities. A special gesture was made to honor women from hill communities married to valley men, and vice versa, with locally-sourced gifts symbolizing unity and mutual respect across cultural boundaries.

Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah, attending as the chief guest, praised the “Ningol Chakouba” festival as a unique tradition that fosters fraternity among brothers and sisters and serves as a significant cultural bridge between the Tangkhul and Meitei communities. MLA Muivah emphasized the importance of this event in reviving and honoring the ancient ties between the two groups, expressing hope that it will become an annual event.

Highlighting the deep-rooted historical connections, MLA Ram Muivah recalled the significant contributions of the Tangkhul people to the Meitei kingdom. He noted that the large pond near the sacred Kangla shrine was dug by Tangkhul laborers, who were subsequently granted a settlement area called “Purupat,” likely the present-day Porompat, as documented in Prof. Gangmumei Kamei’s History of Manipur. He also mentioned that Tangkhul workers were responsible for constructing important pathways in the valley, including routes from the Kangla to Khwairamband and the ancient pond at Langthabal Konung, records of which are preserved in the royal chronicle, Cheitharol Kumpaba.

The event was attended by prominent figures, including Thangjam Joykumar, MD of Thangjam Agro Industry Private Limited; Asang Kasar, President of the Indigenous Peoples Forum; Khuraijam Athouba, Working President of IPSA; and social activist Prof. Arambam Noni.
