Imphal: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Monday celebrated the 133rd birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India today with a function held at Congress Bhavan here.
Born in 1889, Nehru served as the country’s first prime minister. He died in 1964 and remains the longest serving Indian prime minister.
MPCC president, K Meghachandra and former three times chief minister of Manipur, O Ibobi Singh were among other leaders of the MPCC who paid floral tribute to the late Prime Minister.
Speaking on the occasion, Ibobi said that Nehru was the architect of modern India.

As the first Prime Minister, he steered India through numerous challenges and laid the foundation for growth in the industrial, economic, infrastructural and other spheres, Ibobi also said.
He committed his life to building the nation and it is because of him that India became one of the superpower countries, the former three time chief minister added.
MPCC president, K Meghachandra said that Nehru had committed his entire life in building the nation and it was because of his contribution that India emerged as one of the super power countries in the globe.

Asserting that Children’s Day is being celebrated on his birthday, the MPCC president said that rights of the children should be respected.
While celebrating Children’s Day, he said, there is a need for awareness of the rights, care, and education of children.
Nehru had advocated for children to have fulfilled education. He considered children as the real strength of a nation and the foundation of society, he said.
