Central Govt Reportedly Holds Talks With Four Manipur Militant Outfits in Guwahati

Ukhrul, June 6: The Government of India has held a meeting with the leaders of four Kuki militant groups of Manipur under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement, according to reports.

As per the reports, the meeting was held on Thursday at the Assam Police’s Special Branch headquarters at Kahilipara in Guwahati, Assam. The details of the meeting are yet to be known, the reports added.

It may be mentioned that the meeting was held two days after the visit of Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan to Manipur. The Union Home Secretary accompanied by Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Kumar Deka was on a two-day visit to the strife-torn Manipur, which is now grappling with floods and landslides, following incessant rain.

During their two-day-visit (June 2 and 3) to the northeastern state, the two visited several relief camps in three districts of Kangpokpi and Churachandpur and Imphal East districts and supervised the well-being of the violence-hit displaced people, the reports said. The Union Home Secretary also held a high-level meeting with Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Monday and reviewed the ongoing fencing work along the India-Myanmar border as well as the law and order situation in the state.

“Manipur Governor Bhalla and Union Home Secretary Mohan held high-level review meeting with top civil, Army, para-military and security officials and the discussion focussed on key issues concerning the state, including ongoing fencing work, along the 398-km India-Myanmar border with Manipur as well as the law and order situation in the state,” the reports quoted a Raj Bhavan official as saying.

Meanwhile, some MLAs and leaders of the Kuki communities in Manipur had demanded the GoI to resume talks with the Kuki militants groups under SoO agreement during a crucial meeting in Guwahati in May, 2025. It may be mentioned that the United Peoples’ Front and Kuki National Organisation- conglomerates of 23 underground groups, signed a Suspension of Operation (SoO) with the GoI on August 22, 2008, when the Congress was in power.

Over 260 people have lost their lives while thousands have been rendered homeless in the ethnic violence that rocked the state since May 2023.
