Gunfight Among Naga Brothers Unfortunate: NPF

KOHIMA: The Naga People’s Front (NPF) said it was deeply concerned about the unfortunate gunfighting between two Naga armed groups reported on January 9 in “Naga areas of Myanmar”, resulting in deaths and injuries to some “Naga boys”.

As the Nagas entered the New Year 2026 with full of hope and expectations, the reported fighting amongst the “Naga brothers” is absolutely discouraging, the NPF said on Thursday. According to the party, the gunfight “sends out the wrong message and undermines our collective efforts towards peace and unity”.

The NPF also said it was also worried that such “fratricidal violence” may vitiate the environment of the forthcoming Naga Yoya New Year celebration in Layshi town, Naga Self-Administered Zone, scheduled on January 15. The Naga Yoya New Year festival, an annual event, is being hosted this year by Layshi town, “and we fear that continued fighting may disrupt the festivities”, it added.

The NPF then urged all “Naga political groups” to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue. “Fighting within the family won’t yield positive results but cause further damage. Peace, unity, and reconciliation are essential. Fighting must be stopped”, it stated.
