Mobile data services have been suspended for five days in Jiribam district of Manipur where the district administration had already clamped curfew to check escalating post-poll violence incidents in parts of the district.
After the declaration of the results of the Assembly election on March 10, there were a series of violent incidents including destruction of properties in the district.
With tension among the people of the district running high, the district administration promulgated indefinite curfew, restricting people moving out of their homes under section 144 (1) of CrPC 1973 with immediate effect from 4 pm on Friday.
Even after the curfew, anti-social elements were using social media extensively for transmission of images, hate speech and hate video messages inciting passions of the public.
“The social media has also become a handy tool for rumor mongers and was being used to incite the general public which might have serious repercussions for the law and order situation in the district”, the Home department stated.
