Ukhrul: As the northeastern state of Manipur continues to grapple with year-long ethnic violence with no sign of peace in sight, Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey today met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the Ministry of Home Affairs in North Block. The high-level meeting comes in light of the fresh bout of violence in Jiribam and the ongoing unrest in Manipur.
According to reports, Governor Uikey met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in light of the ongoing unrest in Manipur to discuss the state’s security scenario. The meeting aimed to assess the situation and formulate strategies for peace.
It may be recalled that during Amit Shah’s three-day visit to Manipur in the early stages of the ethnic violence outbreak, he held meetings with people from different communities to promote dialogue and restore peace and tranquility in the state. However, that intervention did not yield tangible outcomes. It is also worth noting that during his one-day visit to Manipur on April 15, 2024, aimed at campaigning for the BJP candidate in the Inner Manipur Parliamentary constituency, Amit Shah had stated, “I will not allow Manipur to fragment. Ensuring peace in Manipur by inclusive engagement with all communities is a top priority of the Narendra Modi government.”
While the specifics of the high-level meeting with Amit Shah have not been disclosed, it is seen as a crucial step towards addressing the situation in strife-torn Manipur with the coming back of the NDA government. The people of the state eagerly anticipate a resolution to the ongoing ethnic violence.

In addition to Anusuiya Uikey meeting with Amit Shah, the Governor also called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The meeting discussed the aftermath of the devastating floods in Manipur. The Governor sought the President’s assistance for relief and rescue operations being undertaken by state and central agencies. She also highlighted the hardships faced by Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in various relief camps and requested immediate action for their resettlement and financial aid.
Additionally, a note from the Raj Bhavan said that Governor Uikey invited President Murmu to attend the Convocation Ceremony of Manipur University. She also met with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to request financial assistance for the state. The President assured the Governor of all possible support for Manipur.
Adding salt to the wound, Manipur was devastated by floods that severely impacted large parts of the capital, Imphal Valley. The floods, which occurred in the last week of May, have affected over 1.80 lakh people and damaged more than 24,000 houses. The disaster was triggered by heavy rains from Cyclone Remal, which caused river embankments to breach. In response to the crisis, the state government announced an “immediate relief” measure, providing Rs. 10,000 to every flood-affected family, an official revealed on June 14.
In an unusual sight, the residence of the Manipur Governor, Raj Bhavan, was also submerged by the floodwaters. Governor Anusuiya Uikey was seen personally checking the water levels at the Raj Bhavan, highlighting the severity of the situation.
