Ukhrul, April 25: Normal life in the valley areas of Manipur came to a halt today due to a 24-hour statewide general strike called by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) in response to the alleged custodial death of village volunteer Khoisanam Sanajaoba.
The strike, which began at midnight, saw the closure of shops, markets, and educational institutions across Imphal, including major commercial areas such as Khwairamband Keithel, Paona Bazar, and Thangal Bazar. Roads were largely deserted, with only private, emergency, and essential vehicles seen operating.

Sanajaoba was arrested on March 31 and later placed in judicial custody. He died on April 13 at JNIMS hospital due to health complications. Seeking justice, the JAC has sought punishment for those involved, compensation for the family, and a government job for Sanajaoba’s kin. With their demands unmet, the JAC submitted a memorandum to the Governor and initiated the strike.
While government offices remained open, many private businesses and transportation services were shut down, significantly impacting daily life. Security forces were deployed at strategic locations to prevent any potential incidents. However, at the time of this report, there had been no reports of any disturbances.
