Manipur: 24- hr shutdown imposed against unruly monetary demands by miscreants

Imphal: Normal business transactions in markets of Imphal were severely hit by a 24-hour shutdown today.

Paona Bazar and Thangal Bazar shop owners’ community downed their shutters while highlighting grievances being faced by them due to unbearable monetary demands imposed on them by miscreants.

The shutdown commenced from Sunday midnight.

In response to the one-day strike, almost all the shops and other business establishments across Paona Bazar and Thangal Bazar, the main business hubs of the state, remained closed for the day.

Pharmacies and medical whole-sale stores also downed their shutters, in showing solidarity to the business community.

The decision to impose the shutdown was taken in a meeting of the business community of Paona Bazar and Thangal Bazar convened on Sunday that deliberated on the increasing burden on the heads of the shopkeepers and businessmen after various groups imposed monetary demands in the name of “donation”.

A press release in this regard stated that all major and small shops in the market area unanimously decided to call the 24-hour shutdown from the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, in view of the various inconveniences faced by the shop owners.
