Manipur police lodge FIR case against Assam Rifles

Imphal: Amid the people’s demand for removal of Assam Rifles from Manipur, the Manipur police have lodged an FIR case against personnel of the 9 Assam Rifles for allegedly obstructing police personnel in discharging their law bound duty.

The case was related with an incident that occurred on August 5 in which the personnel of the 9 Assam Rifles allegedly blocked the way for the Manipur police team by keeping and parking their “casper vehicle” in the middle of the Kwakta Pholang road.

In the suo-motu case registered with Phougakchao Ikhai police station of Bishnupur district, the personnel of the paramilitary force were accused of obstructing the Manipur police from discharging their law bound duty.

The personnel of the Assam Rifles were accused of disobeying law by public servant with intent to cause injury to any persons, obstructing public servant in discharging of public function threat to injury to public servant, punishment for wrongful restraint, punishment for assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation, punishment for criminal intimidation, common intention in the case registered under various section of IPC, an official source said.

The case report of the police said that on the day (August 5) at about 6.40 am, teams of Manipur police including district commandos, Bishnupur, led by superintendent of police of Bishnupur proceeded towards the Pholjang road along Kwakta Ward Number 8 as a follow up action to a case under Arms Act for conducting search operation to trace the accused Kuki militants that might have been taking shelter at Kwakta Ward number 8 which is located at the adjoining area between Kwakta and Pholjang village.

The report continued that on reaching the Kutub Wali Masjid the state police teams were “stopped and blocked their way” by the personnel of 9 Assam Rifles by keeping and parking their ‘casper vehicle’ in the middle of the Kwakta Pholjang road and obstructed in discharging their law bound duty.

“As such, an arrogant act of the personnel of 9 Assam Rifles giving a chance to the accused Kuki militants to escape freely to somewhere, a safe zone for them,” it said.

The earlier case the police mentioned in the FIR was related with the killing of three persons including father and son sleeping in their respective homes by suspected Kuki militants who slipped into their houses at Kwakta Lamkhai in the wee hours of August 5.

On that day, on receiving the information, the teams of state police including Bishnupur district police commandos led by the SP of the district had rushed to the village.

After a heated exchange of words, the police teams rushed to the spot engaged in a heavy gunfight with the suspected Kuki militants.
