Manipur violence: 1 BSF jawan killed, 2 AR injured in firing by insurgents in Kakching Dist

Imphal: One jawan of Border Security Force (BSF) killed while two Assam Rifles personnel sustained injuries during gunfight between the security forces and militants in Manipur’s Sugnu-Serou in Kakching district on the intervening night of June 5-6, said an Army officials.

According to an official report, following the incidents of violence, arson and firing in Sugnu-Serou, joint security forces, including Army, Assam Rifles, police and CAPFs commenced extensive Area Domination Operations in the area.

“Extensive area domination operations by Assam Rifles, BSF and Police undertaken in areas of Sugnu/Serou in Manipur. Intermittent firing between security forced and group of insurgents took place throughout night of 05/06 June. Security Forces effectively retaliated to the fire,” Spear Corps, Indian Army tweeted on Tuesday.

“One BSF Jawan sustained fatal injuries while two Assam Rifles personnel sustained Gun Shot Wounds (GSW) in general area Serou. Injured Assam Rifles personnel air evacuated to Mantripukhri. Search opera in progress,” it added.

The deceased jawan has been identified CT/CD Ranjit Yadav of 163 Bn BSF, deployed at Serou Practical High School under Sugnu PS.

“Ct/CD Ranjit Yadav displayed conspicuous bravery, high degree of dedication and devotion to duty during the exchange of fire when suspected Kuki miscreants resorted to indiscriminate and heavy volume of firing towards BSF troops,” tweeted the BSF.

Meanwhile, the official further informed that redeployment of seven additional troops (5 of Assam Rifles and 2 of BSF) has been necessitated in the general area over the past 48 hrs. The additional troops were tasked to beef up ongoing extensive area domination operations, ambushes and measures to prevent arson/ violence, it said.

As per the latest official report, inputs indicate some casualties to insurgents and are being verified on ground.

During the preliminary search, two AK series Rifles, one 51mm mortar, two Carbines, ammunition and warlike stores have been recovered from the general area. 

Meanwhile, operations are in progress to sanitise the area, it added.

Earlier on Friday, tensions erupted between Sugnu police and 37 Assam Rifles when the latter reportedly blocked the main gates of Manipur police at Sugnu police station.
