Mirabai Chanu inches closer to Medal in Tokyo Olympics

Manipur’s Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, the former world champion who clinched a bronze medal at the weightlifting arena in Asian Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in April 2021 successfully cleared 84 kg in her first attempt and then 87kg in her second attempt, according to Voice of India Sports news report.

The report also added that Gold medal favourite Hou Zhihui of China created a new Olympic record as she lifted 94kg. Zhihui is also the current record holder in the women’s 49kg category.

Mirabai Chanu’s personal best stands at 205kg. She has entered 210kg as her expected total in the women’s 49kg start list of the Tokyo Olympic Games along with rivals, Hou Zhihui of China, Windy Aisha of Indonesia and Elizabeth Delacruz of the USA. The three have registered 205kg, 203kg and 200kg, respectively, according to Sportstar report.

Mirabai Chanu 26-year-old Indian set a new world record in clean and jerk 119kg in clean and jerk for a total of 205kg in Uzbekistan. She had said, “I am happy with my performance at the Asian Championship 2021. Thank you everyone for your love and support. I will continue to work hard and improve myself”.
