Agartala, Sept 10: A young mother’s death after a C-section at Arunachal Pradesh’s lone medical college has set off angry protests in Naharlagun, with the Youth Congress demanding Health Minister Biyuram Wahge’s resignation.
On Sunday, hundreds of family members, local residents, and activists from the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU) Women’s Wing staged demonstrations outside the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS). They alleged that 22-year-old Bengia Ama Gora died due to medical negligence following a surgery conducted on September 2.
Her brother, Bengia Lali, claimed that hospital staff failed to provide proper care during and after the operation. He said his sister’s condition deteriorated rapidly during the procedure, but no timely intervention was made. Lali has filed a formal complaint at the Naharlagun Police Station, demanding accountability for what he described as preventable loss of life.

“This is not an isolated case,” Lali told reporters, echoing the concerns of the AAPSU Women’s Wing, which accused TRIHMS of a history of similar incidents. Protesters announced they would not take back Bengia’s body from the mortuary until justice is delivered.
According to a report in the Arunachal Times, the Arunachal Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC) on Tuesday accused the Health Department of repeated failures and demanded the resignation of Health Minister Biyuram Wahge. “Health Minister Biyuram Wahge must step down,” APYC leader Tarh Johny was quoted as saying.
The protesters’ demands include setting up a new general hospital in the Itanagar Capital Region in memory of Bengia Ama Gora, banning private practice by government doctors, and a swift, impartial investigation into the incident with strict action against those found guilty.
