NSCN (YA) and ULFA (I) Announce August 15 Shutdown in Four Northeastern States

Ukhrul: In a joint statement, the NSCN/GPRN (Yung Ayung) and ULFA (Independent) have declared a total shutdown across Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh on August 15, from 12:01 AM to 6:00 PM.

The groups urge citizens to reject India’s Independence Day, calling it a “Black Day” and a symbol of colonial oppression.

“Under the spirit of ‘One People One Region One Vision’, we call upon all the freedom loving Wesean citizens to reject this day and support our boycott call by remaining indoors,” the joint statement says.

They accuse India of attempting to portray false normalcy in the region while suppressing local aspirations. To this the NSCN/GPRN (YA) and ULFA (I) says, “This colonialist symbol is just to deceive the world and justify the illegal domination to continue suppression of the legitimate aspirations of the Wesean region. India is desperately trying to paint the picture of normalcy in the region which is only a myth.”

Beneath the veneer lies a harsh reality composed of brutal military oppression, endless human right violations and cruel assimilation policies, says the Northeast groups.

The groups describe the day as a reminder of India’s “brutal occupation” and call for citizens to boycott by staying indoors.

The shutdown will exempt emergency services, media, and religious activities.
