Senapati, May 10: The traditional paddy transplantation festival known as “PAOKI,” celebrated in the local dialect, became a vibrant tourism festival of Manipur, graced by Solomon Arow, President of the Naga People’s Organization (NPO), as the chief guest.
Organized by the Purul Youth & Students Organization (PYSO) and sponsored by the Tourism department, Government of Manipur, the festival garnered immense participation from tribe representatives under NPO, including the Mao Council, Poumai Naga Union, and Zeliangrong Union-Senapati Zone. Various youths also joined in the festivities, participating in a lively wrestling competition held on the second day of the festival.
Cultural Significance and Activities
PAOKI holds a prominent place, drawing the highest footfall of tourists during this traditional mega festival. It stands out as the inaugural village for rice plantation in the area, emphasizing agriculture as the village’s backbone. The festival, spanning three consecutive days, commences annually in May, observed and celebrated as a Tourism Festival of Purul. Guests and tourists are treated lavishly, ensuring an unforgettable experience, according to organizers.
Daily Festivities
The festival unfolds with distinct activities each day:
- Day 1 (RANAI-YU): Marked by butchering and feast preparations, households prepare 50 to 70 kgs of meat/fish for the festival.
- Day 2 (THAOPAI-YU): Villagers gather paddy saplings for transplantation, followed by an engaging Naga wrestling competition that extends into the early hours.
- Day 3 (KHANAI-YU): Dedicated to plantation, the day witnesses the entire village engaging in solidarity, rendering help in the fields, and culminating in a festive atmosphere with songs and lavish meals.
Cultural Heritage and Community Spirit
The festival showcases Purul’s rich history, unique culture, and vibrant traditions, making it a prime tourist destination. Naada, President of Purul Youth & Students Organization, emphasized the importance of community spirit, welcoming guests and urging them to feel at home.
Solomon Arow’s Message
Addressing the gathering, Solomon Arow highlighted the festival’s historical significance, especially with the presence of other tribe Presidents under NPO, marking a momentous occasion for Purul. He praised Purul for upholding age-old traditions and transforming them into a significant Tourism festival of Manipur.
The festival concluded with fervent participation in the wrestling competition and the continued transplantation of paddy rice, symbolizing the community’s resilience and cultural vibrancy.
