Ukhrul, Aug 24: The pathetic road conditions of National Highway 202, Imphal-Ukhrul road are causing great misery to the people of Ukhrul and Kamjong Districts of Manipur. Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (TMNL), in a press release, stated that “Since the onset of monsoon season, persistent roadblocks have severely impacted the Imphal-Ukhrul road, leaving it in a deplorable condition.”
Despite addressing the grievances raised by the general public, vehicles continue to be stranded during emergencies without timely clearance. This issue has significantly affected people from all walks of life. “Tangkhul Youth Council (TMNL) strongly criticizes the responsible authority, NHIDCL, for failing to address these concerns adequately and will hold them responsible for any adverse consequences if urgent action is not taken.”

President of TMNL, Themaso Tallanao, stated that “National Highway 202 (Imphal-Ukhrul-Jesami) had been forsaken in terms of completion, clearance and maintenance. The road has been left unattended. It is pertinent that the security of the people along the National Highway cannot be put at risk. Various road accident has occured due to the ill maintenance of the road leading to multiple losses of preious lives. Good quality and timely execution of the National Highway 202 has become a far cry for citizens of Ukhrul and Kamjong District.”
The pathetic road condition is taking its toll on the business establishments in Ukhrul, regardless of big or small. It is learned that 1320kg of fishes belonging to four women vendors, namely, Mary Grace Kh, Chuimi K Shimrei, Somichon P and L Namdila were wasted because their vehicle transporting the fishes were stranded along the National Highway for many days.

The public is fuming because of the pathetic conditions of the road, which pose a serious threat to the safety of the travellers. Frequent landslides and roadblocks along the Imphal-Ukhrul road have caused havoc to the lives of the people. If these continue, transportation of essential supplies will be affected.
