Powerful IED blast damages pharmacy in Manipur

Imphal: Suspected militants on Wednesday triggered a powerful IED which damaged a pharmacy extensively in Imphal’s Khurai Lamlong Bazar. The IED exploded at Bobby Pharmacy in the wee hours of today, around 2.40 am. There was no report of human casualty in the blast.

The IED was so powerful that the impact of the blast blew the iron shutter of the shop several meters away besides shattering window panes of neighboring buildings. A fire that caught inside the shop by the impact of the blast also reduced almost all the goods including medicinal items to ashes. Police who rushed to the spot immediately called out fire fighters and doused the fire before it spread to neighbouring buildings.

Almost all the medicines and other items stored in the pharmacy were reduced to ashes.

The pharmacy belonged to Mloirangthem Bobby Singh of Singjamei Chinga Makha. Family claimed that goods including medicines worth several lakhs were destroyed in the blast.

No militant group owned up the responsibility for the blast.

Police suspected the IED was being detonated by militants in connection with monetary demand.
