UKHRUL: The 68th Shomi Memorial Sports Meet 2025 ended on Saturday at the Bakshi Mini Stadium, Hungpung. The week-long sporting extravaganza, organized by the Thawaijao Hungpung Youth Students’ Organization (THYSO), concluded with a grand valedictory ceremony and final football match.
In his presidential address, Hubert Lunghar, president of THYSO, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the participants, supporters, and the local community. He shared a brief history of the Shomi Memorial Sports Meet, reminding the younger generation of its origins, tribute to Dominic Shomi AS, the village’s first graduate and a distinguished sportsman.
The programme was graced by distinguished professionals from the Hungpung.

The guest of honour, Mahung Khuiya Shimray Worthemphy, senior engineer at Livguard (SAR Group), spoke on the character-building power of athletics. “Sports teach us in many ways,” she remarked, noting that success on the field demands rigorous effort and discipline, traits that translate directly into professional life.
The chief guest, Reisang Mahung, principal software engineer at Causeway Software Technologies Ltd., delivered a stirring call for community-driven progress, using the historic conservation journey of Khonoma village as a backdrop for future growth. Reflecting on the village’s pivotal shift in 1993, when the community turned away from the hunting of endangered birds to embrace conservation. Mahung lauded the village’s 25-year legacy as a “Green Village” (declared in 2005) focused on biodiversity and organic farming.
Mahung emphasized that the legacy of the past must now be met with a clear roadmap for the future. “Our forefathers gave us land and identity; vision is what we must give to the next generation,” he stated.

Addressing the elders as “torchbearers” whose blessings remain essential, he addressed the youth, “Future is on you,” he reminded them, calling for discipline both “on and off the field.”
Closing with words of encouragement for the competing teams, Mahung asserted, “Play hard, play fair, and play with pride. You have won the match even before it started.”
The highlight of the day was the Final Match between Vashimtang Youth Organisation (VYO) and Zingshotang Youth Organisation (ZYO). The match kicked off following a formal Inspection of the Players by the dignitaries.
Vashimtang, featuring a star-studded lineup of national-level players including Chihanso, Hormipam, Yami, and Soreisem, displayed clinical precision. Despite a spirited defense from Zingshotang’s Thuiring, Kahorngam, Yokshim, and Worchipei, Vashimtang Youth Organisation emerged victorious, securing the title and being declared the Overall Champion of the 68th edition.
