Tangkhul Naga Civil Bodies Condemn Assault of Women by Security Forces at Ukhrul’s Laho

UKHRUL: The Tangkhul Naga civil bodies, including the Tangkhul Shanao Long (TSL) and Raphei Katamnao Long (RKL), have condemned the security forces’ brutal physical assault of women villagers in Laho (Leingangching) village, Ukhrul District, Manipur, on Tuesday. The civil bodies have demanded an immediate and impartial enquiry into the incident to deliver justice.

Strongly condemning the incident, the Tangkhul Shanao Long, the apex body of Tangkhul women’s unions, described the assault as deeply questionable and unacceptable, especially from an institution entrusted to protect citizens’ rights.

“The Tangkhul Naga womenfolk have been playing a pivotal role in restoring peace and stability amidst the current conflict despite threats and challenges. But if our support, restraint, and understanding of the situation is considered a weakness, we will be compelled to act accordingly,” the TSL said.

It also stated that the unlawful use of force against anyone, particularly women who are raising their voice for peace, is a serious violation of human rights and goes against the principles of justice and the rule of law. “Law enforcement authorities are expected to act with restraint and be accountable for their actions,” it said, adding, “The incident not only undermines public trust in the central armed forces but has become a source of fear.”

Given the seriousness and urgency of the matter, the TSL demands an immediate, impartial investigation into the incident, the suspension of the personnel involved, and the initiation of criminal proceedings against them.

“This is not just a condemnation; it is a wake-up call to end the culture of impunity,” TSL said while demanding justice and accountability.

The Raphei Katamnao Long has also strongly condemned the incident. The student body alleges, citing eye witness accounts and testimonies, that the security forces use chemical agents, sprays, tasers, and other forms of coercive force against the unarmed women who stood peacefully for security and justice.

“Such actions are indefensible under any circumstance and reflect a complete collapse of restraint, accountability, and humanity,” it decried, adding, “The appalling misuse of power constitutes a gross abuse of authority, violates human dignity, and a direct assault on the constitutional guarantees enshrined under Article 14 (Equality before the law) and Article 21 (Right to life and dignity) of the Constitution of India.”

Additionally, the student body, while denouncing the ‘inhumane conduct,’ demands an immediate, impartial, and time-bound investigation.

“It is both tragic and intolerable that institutions mandated to protect have instead become instruments of fear, intimidation, and trauma. The Tangkhul women of Laho did not stand in aggression-they stood in courage for peace, dignity, and their fundamental rights. To be met with violence in return is a moral and institutional failure of the highest order,” it added.
