Tangkhul Villages Celebrate Luira̱ Festival, Marking Start of Agrarian Season

Dimapur, March 8: The Tangkhuls in Dimapur came together to celebrate Luira̱ Phanit which was also celebrated across all Tangkhul villages, signifying not only the culmination of leisure time but also heralding the beginning of the busy agricultural season. With colorful traditional attire adorning villagers of all ages, the festival is a time of joy and community bonding.

The Luira̱ Phanit, also known as the seed sowing festival, was held at the Stone Park, NEZCC, Diphupar, on March 8. The event was graced by Gen (Retd.) VS Atem, Dy. Ato Kilonser, NSCN/GPRN, who served as the chief guest and performed the traditional act of invoking blessings for a bountiful harvest.

A highlight of the celebration was a song competition featuring Lungchan Laa, a duet traditionally sung during courtship. Participants, both young and old, showcased their vocal talents in this cherished tradition. Additionally, the Hao Laa, a series of traditional folk songs sung during seed sowing time, resonated throughout the event, adding to the festive atmosphere.

The festivities organised by the Tangkhul Union Dimapur also included competitions showcasing cultural wear, folk songs, and tug-of-war, further enhancing the spirit of camaraderie and cultural pride among attendees.

The Luira̱ Festival not only serves as a time for merriment but also underscores the cultural heritage and agricultural traditions deeply rooted in Tangkhul communities in the Northeast region of India and parts of Myanmar. As villagers come together to celebrate and participate in various cultural activities, the festival reaffirms the importance of unity and collective celebration in the Tangkhul way of life.
