Two days training program on ‘Scientific Production Technology’ of Kiwi fruit was held on January 27 and 28, 2021, at Awontang, Ukhrul. It was sponsored by Central Institute of Horticulture, Medziphema, Nagaland and organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ukhrul district, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre, Imphal.
The aim of the training was to make the farmers more productive by imparting the scientific knowledge about Kiwi fruit. Dr. Solei Luiram, Subject Matter Specialist (Hort) gave insight on cultivars, soil and climate, seed extraction, methods and timing of sowing, vegetative propagation, planting, training and pruning, manures and fertilizers, irrigation, flowering and pollination, insects pest and diseases, harvesting and yield. He further shared the prospects of Kiwi fruit cultivation in North East based on its wider adaptability, high returns, easy propagation, no serious pest and diseases marketing, it’s high nutritive and medicinal value.
“Apple is also very favorable in Ukhrul. In olden days we can see our apple trees bearing good apples but not anymore due to the lack of proper care and scientific knowledge. We need this kind of training more often on other fruits as well,” said Shangreiso A Shimray, former TNL President.
Knowing the importance of farming and cultivation being deeply rooted in the culture of the Nagas since time immemorial, many are passionate farmers. Entrepreneurs, farmers, youths, and elders from different villages attended the training.
Zanyo Varam, Convenor, UFSD (Ukhrul for Sustaibable Development) said, ” Many farmers are engaging in farming more seriously. Therefore, one day consultation on ‘Farmers Producer Organization (FPO) will be held on 5th Feb. 2021. at UDCM/IFAD Hall, Viewland.”
Practical was done at Khaithom Farm, Awontang, located in the heart of the town. The farm was owned by Artax A Shimray, a Social Activist and passionate farmer. Varieties of fruits, vegetables, flora, saplings, and more are available at Khaithom Farm.
Dr. Luiram, and his KVK team distributed Kiwi cutter, cash and certificates to all the participants. The program was concluded in a very encouraging note.
