Ukhrul: Historic Tangkhul dog breed Haofa̱ Statue Unveiled

Ukhrul: Minister of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry and Transport, Manipur, Khashim Vashum on Friday unveiled the statue of Haofa̱ at Phungreitang, Ukhrul town in the presence of DC of Ukhrul, Kengoo Zuringla, SP of Ukhrul, Ningshem Vashum, DFO of Ukhrul, Shanngam shaliwo, SDO of LM Block, Rohini Kumar, DGM MSPDCL-Ukhrul, Akui L. Shimray and lovers of Haofa̱.

Haofa̱ is an indigenous canine breed of the Tangkhul Naga in the world.

Haofa̱ is considered as a rare Tangkhul indigenous breed due to its distinctive characteristics that makes it special and different from other local dogs.

Known for its gentleness, obedience and hunting skill, the indigenous Haofa̱ has unmatched sniffing ability and posses innate qualities ideal for hunter, or group of hunters. Among its many characteristics, bravery one among them, the Haofa̱ breed is known to be loyal and a faithful companion, and its intelligence grows with age. Since time immemorial, Haofa̱ has been with the people of Tangkhul tribe of Manipur, believed to have migrated along with the Tangkhuls many eons ago, according to historians.

Donated by well wishers, the statue was constructed by famed artist Sorei Keishing. The artist is well known for one of his distinguished sculptures, Statue of Unity at the base of Shirui peak, which have now become a famous tourist landmark.

Hundreds of Ukhrul denizens came to witness the unveiling programme and expressed their admiration at the historic unveiling of the Haofa̱ statue.

Over the years, many in the region have developed an interest in rearing the Tangkhul Haofa̱. It is worth nothing that even the Assam Rifles have started ordering for procurement of the breed for their dog training Centre at Jorhat, Assam.

To preserve the Haofa̱ breed and boost local economy by attracting more people in the region, Haofa̱ festival for the first time was organised in December 2022 by Phungcham Haofa̱ Lovers Association in collaboration with Phungcham Village Authority, Phungcham VDC, Phungcham Shanao Long and Phungcham Katamnao Mayar Ngala Long.
