Weapons Surrender Deadline: 307 Surrendered

Ukhrul, Feb 27: As the deadline for the weapon surrendering draws to a close, the Manipur Police received a total of 307 weapons today.

In a press note, the Manipur Police stated that the Governor’s request for the surrender of looted and illegally held arms and ammunition had yielded a positive response, in both the valley and the hill districts. It also stated various groups, including youth volunteers, community leaders, CSOs, and women organisations, played a significant role in handing over/ surrender of the illegally held weapons/ and ammunition.

The Police stated that out of the total 307 weapons surrendered today, 246 were surrendered at the 1st MR Manipur Rile Campus, and 61 at other places in both the hills and valley districts. It also stated that such voluntary surrender of weapons would significantly help in restoring peace, communal harmony and lawfulness in the state of Manipur.

As the seven days granted for voluntary surrender was set to conclude today, the police also requested all concerned individuals, especially the youths, to come forward and surrender any looted or illegally held arms to the nearest police station/outposts and any security force camps. Further, it called upon Community leaders, CSOs, and women’s organisations to continue facilitating the surrender of such weapons.

“During this period, no punitive action will be taken against the individuals who voluntarily surrender weapons. However, any person found in possession of illegal or looted arms after the deadline will face appropriate legal action as per the law. This is a last and crucial opportunity for everyone to contribute to peace, communal harmony, safeguarding the future of our youths and security of our society. We again request all those still in possession of such weapons to avail themselves of this final chance to surrender them without any fear of prosecution within the given period,” the Police’s press note stated.

Finally ending the call, the police stated, “Together, let us work towards a safer and more secure future of Manipur, Together we can”.
