UKHRUL: A major fire engulfed the high altitude border region near Kupup village in East Sikkim. Following a series of High-stake operations involving Civil administration, Indian Army and the local residents, the fire was successfully contained.
The blaze which reportedly ignited on January 20, was treated as highly sensitive because of its proximity to the “Zero Line” involving key military installations along the India-China border. No causalities have been reported so far.
Local residents reported hearing lound “bursting” sounds as the fire raged which caused alarm. According to sources, the sounds were most likely caused by landmines being triggered due to intense heat of the fire.

The Army stated that the recent increase in forest fires in the region is caused by unusually dry vegetation in the hills along with strong winds. A recent fire was also reported earlier on January 18, at Thambi View Point near the Nathula border.
Officials warned that the ongoing dry weather still poses a threat to the fragile Himalayan region, where forest fires are frequent during this season in Sikkim.
