Ukhrul, May 16: The 10 suspected militants killed in an alleged gunfight reportedly with an Assam Rifles unit along the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur’s Chandel district on May 14, 2025, were Myanmarese nationals, Scroll has reported. A senior state police official on Friday told the outlet that the bodies have since been handed over to authorities across the border.

According to sources, the Assam Rifles patrol came under heavy fire from suspected insurgents near New Samtal village in Chandel district, prompting a retaliatory operation that resulted in the deaths of ten individuals dressed in camouflage fatigues. Efforts are ongoing to formally establish their identities.

The suspected militants are believed to have been involved in cross-border insurgent activities. A major cache of weapons was recovered from the site, including seven AK-47 rifles, one M4 rifle, one RPG launcher, four single-barrel breech-loading (SBBL) rifles, ammunition, and other war-like stores.

The Assam Rifles and other security agencies continue to maintain heightened vigilance along the Indo-Myanmar border to curb insurgent activities and ensure regional stability, reports said.
