Abonmai was abducted and assassinated on September 22, 2021, while attending a State government-sponsored programme at Tamenglong District Headquarters. The incident, which occurred in the presence of top dignitaries and officials, was attributed to miscreants suspected to be from the NSCN-IM.

At the commemoration, leaders and family members thanked the Government of Manipur for honoring commitments made in the October 6, 2021 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), particularly the establishment of a memorial park. The foundation stone for the park was laid by then Chief Minister N. Biren Singh during Abonmai’s funeral, in the presence of ministers, MLAs, and senior officials.

Today, the Memorial Park stands not only as a tribute to Abonmai’s legacy but also as a resting and leisure space for communities in the surrounding areas.
